This Friday, from 13h onwards, we invite you to the opening of the Time Inventors’ Kabinet Festival, a series of events about ecology and media art.
Festival dates are : 11, 12 and 13 may 2012 – daily from 1pm till late. Entrance is free!
Festival Location : OKNO – iMAL- Q-O2 Koolmijnenkaai 30/34 Quai des Charbonnages – Brussels – Belgium.

For a complete program of the exhibition, conferences, concerts and performances : please visit our festivalwebsite
we especially want to mention the walks and workshops, and when they are scheduled.
If you are planning on participating, we’d appreciate it if you could drop us a line at steklo@okno.be!
All participative activities will start at, or take place at the TIK marketplace.

Friday, 11th at 15h : OpenGreen Bike tour & Mapping (event in public space)
This bike tour through Brussels is meant to find urban voids and spaces which are only temporarily unused. We will collect memories, objects, plants and impressions. This info will be added to the shared wall map as part of the festival exhibition. The tour will last approximately 3 hours, there will be snacks and drinks for on the way. It’s important that you bring your own bike (we do not provide them) or you can rent the city bikes (learn how to do it on our website).

Every day from 13h onwards : Nothing New (workshops)
Each day we will explore a different topic. In the first part of the day we will create and talk critically about DIY and eco design and later we will hold a more technical workshop. Come alone, or with your friends and family! There are things you should bring with you! Check the shopping-list on our website.

Saturday, 12th 05 2012, from 15 to 18h : Electronic Creatures (workshop)
In this workshop you can build your own simple “life like” machine, which will generate the smallest movements or various tiny sound patterns that allude to birds or insect sounds. Prior knowledge of electronics is not required and kids (10+) are very welcome!

Sunday, 13th at 15h : Return to Thurn & Taxis (walk)
The walk re-traces the exact path of a silent soundwalk undertaken for TIK in June 2011, from OKNO to the rapidly developing urban “wasteland” of Thurn & Taxis. A discussion will follow to interrogate the relationship between sound and space, and how these may change with the passage of time.

breathing_time is a networked performance that is part of the Time Inventors’ Kabinet Festival for ecological time and art and will be performed twice. The piece premieres on Friday 11th of May.
In this performance the breath data of five participants located on separate
locations will provide input for images and sound. A custom device the
‘breathCatcher’ collects the breath data of every participant and sends it
over the internet to a server. The ‘drawingBreath’ software collects all
this data and transforms it into a life animation with sound.
Will these five participants influence each others’ breathing patterns over
a distance and create a collective rhythm?

Friday 11-5-12 om 19u
Saturday 12-5-12 om 19u
Imal

Sound: Richard van Bemmelen; Participants: Adriana Osorio, Lorenzo Brandli,
Mieke van den Hende, Tomoko Baba; Also made possible by the sensor platform:
www.sense-os.nl

“What you see in the space is an animated drawing, representing the breathing of 5 people, of previous performances. On the desk you see also the breath catcher, the wearable sensor capturing data of breathing, from which I have made five different pieces. This installation and also the performance later on, is all about the awareness of your own breath. I am very much aware of my breath, and because I do a lot of meditation I breath very slowly. It was like an assignment: let’s enjoy breathing and be aware of it and let’s see what we can make together.”

“With technology you realize things that you can never do in real life, like people in different locations experiencing their breath. On a more abstract level it is about connecting and creating something new together that wouldn’t be possible before.”

“One of the aspects of using this modular construction model is that you already start by creating something which is intended to be re-used. A lot of what I build is not lost. The second rule of thumb is to use recycled material – most of it is recyclable. The wood is produced completely in an ecological way, but it is industrially produced and it comes from New Zealand. But it is treated in such a way that it does not rot, it lasts very long. The whole procedure of creating wood is ‘cradle to cradle’, so nothing gets lost. So it is also the way of thinking how to produce the wood ecologically in an industrial way. I am not using the local wood from Belgium which will rot anyway, and I believe this will last much longer.”

MAY 2011
Contacting Reni, Isjtar, Barb, organising meetings and planing building trip to Bruessels.
Trying out materials that can be used as analog sensors outdoors. Conductive thread, fabric, ink, graphite, etc.

JUNE 2011
Building a wodden Wind Clock based on the leonardo model (Setting: 30 – 60 – 500).

7.6. 2011 Meeting Reni

tinkering with velotex:
Velotex is a cheap material you can order on http://www.plugandwear.com/
and http://www.lessemf.com/

Velotex is resistive, with a decreasing resistance if bended or pressed. It therefore would work well as a cheap, sustainable and waterproof bend sensor.

Try to build a fabric bend sensor that’s water proof. Have been lazor cutting conductive fabric, worked well. (same setting as “leather”)

8.6.2011 Accelerameter

trying out more sensors
I lazorcutted two more wodden leonardo clocks in order to mount three different sensors.
It was 6,50 EUR for two clocks. Plus twice 5,20 EUR for the material.

Now I try to assemble the two new clocks and think about better measurement systems (e.g. infrared-light-sensor, Ultrasonic Sensor, etc..)
Or maybe simpler and easier and cheaper ways of measuring as e.g. just adding a potentiometer at the top of the moving part in the clock.

Maybe cut something from an old plastic foil in a way that you can fold it like origami and use it as a wind sail.
